I shoulder past Gio as I step out of the elevator into the lobby. He looks shell-shocked to see me there.

“What the—”

“Go check on your sister.”

“If you hurt her—”

“Fuck you.” I turn around and meet his gaze.

He looks taken aback by whatever expression he finds on my face. I hated every second of that torture I spent upstairs telling her about Vinny. More than anything, I hate leaving her there. I hate not touching her. Not kissing her. Not holding her as she cried. Not getting to explain to her why I did what I did. I walk away from Gio. Frankie follows me. I’d know his footsteps anywhere. He wears expensive dress shoes he buys from Mike’s store that make him sound like a damn tap dancer.

“What do you want?” I ask as we step outside.

“You care about her.”

My eyes cut to his. “What the fuck makes you say that?”

“I’ve known you since we were kids, Lor. Give me a fucking break.”

“Yeah, well, I shouldn’t care about her.”

“Because she’s Vinny’s ex or because she’s Joe’s daughter?”

“I don’t know.” I sigh, running a hand down my face. “I need feelings for Catalina like I need a hole in my head.”

“I feel you.” He pops a cigarette into his mouth and lights it. “You ever think about getting out?”

I stiffen. Do I think about it? Fuck. That’s all I think about. I’d never admit it to anyone though, not even someone I’ve known since I was a kid. Especially not to someone I’ve known that long. Getting out or wanting to get out, is a sign of weakness and weak I am not.

“I think about it,” Frankie says, answering his own question.

“Yeah, well, don’t say shit like that out loud.” I start walking away, heading to my bike. “See you.”

“Yo, Loren.”

I turn around.

“He’d be okay with it, you know,” he says, blowing out a cloud of smoke. “Gio, I mean. He’d be okay with you and Cat.”

I scoff, turn back around and keep walking. Gio would be okay with digging my grave and burying me in it alive, too. After what my cousin did to Catalina, I know for a fact neither Joe or Gio would be okay with me stepping in.
